Frequently Asked Questions

What I do: I’ve recorded all styles of music over the years. I’ve also done a fair amount of voice work as well. What I do best is record and mix music; Rock, Jazz, Blues, Country, Alternative, Singer/Songwriter, Americana, etc.

Q: What’s it going to sound like?
A: The sound of any studio is a combination of 3 things, the room, the console and the guy who is sitting behind it. Mixing is a creative art. Do you like the way other projects from the studio sound?

Q: What’s it going to cost?
A: Studio rates are negotiable, especially in this new economy, and in a world where everyone thinks they can just record their album at home on a Dell. However, nobody wants to work for free. You will be hard pressed to find an experienced engineer in a well-equipped studio who will work for less than a fair and equitable hourly rate. If you wish to negotiate a better rate, remember that basic economics usually apply. The more hours we work, the better the rate I can afford to give you. There are a lot of hours between a quickie demo and a full CD project.

Q: How long will it take?
A: How long it takes depends a great deal on how prepared the band is. If you know your stuff cold, you can get a lot done in one day. I work quickly and efficiently, but studio recording takes time. Here’s a rough outline on a per-song basis: Tracking, ½ to 2 hours, overdubs 1 to 3 hours, mixing, also 1 to 3 hours. So, as you can see, it could take anywhere between 3 and 8 hours to complete the song. A lot of this depends on how quickly you can get your takes and how detailed you the want the mix to be.

Q: Are you going to make us all play separately?
A: No, bands like to play together, that is the whole idea of a band. When people have to track one at a time it takes longer and usually doesn’t “feel” as good. I believe in getting basic rhythm tracks done live. Usually that means Drums, Bass, Rhythm Guitar, Keys and a “scratch” vocal. Solos, back-up Vocals and keeper lead Vocals are usually better done as overdubs. Remember, vocals sell songs.

Q: Can I bring my girlfriend, roadie, drinking buddy, little brother or basset hound?
A: No, absolutely not, not even your pet frog. No extra personnel are allowed at sessions. Extra people are just going to get in the way and slow things down which will cost you more money.
